System Operation
Each system provides "active" tamper detection capable of immediately indicating and resolving a breach, or opening of a seal. All closed seals within that loop remain under continuous surveillance during any seal opening. Prompt detection and location determination of tampered items facilitates response to security events and reduces labor associated with routine inspections.
The
ReflectoActive Seals System can monitor seals located nearby
or several kilometers apart in nearly any type of indoor or outdoor
location.
System Components
Event Detector and Locator
The Event Detector and Locator (EDL) is a small (13"W x 10"L x 4"H) network device that is capable of detecting and resolving discontinuities on a single fiber optic loop monitoring up to 300 items. The EDL is the core component of the ReflectoActive Seals System and at least one must be included with each installation. The EDL is much more than a fiber optic discontinuity detector; it also incorporates a state of the art photon counting optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR is used to determine breach locations along the loop of fiber. An optical switch in the EDL allows it to look both forward and backward along the loop of fiber to detect more than one breach and its location.
The EDL has a liquid crystal display (LCD) to provide continuous status to the user. In the event of a breach, this display provides the operator with a forward and reverse distance to the breach. A visual alarm also flashes to alert the user of the breach. This alarm will continue to flash until the breach has been acknowledged (even if the power is cycled). The EDL enclosure also incorporates tamper detection.
The EDL connects to a 10/100 Mbps Local Area Network (LAN). The device acts as a basic web server, allowing the user to configure and view system status with any standard web browser. Data is packaged into digitally signed extensible markup language (XML) documents to ensure compatibility with any operation system or software development package.
Although the EDL can operate stand alone, this is not the recommended configuration. The addition of a System Server and Software provides an array of important features including event logging and middleware to interface the ReflectoActive Seals System into existing accountability or security systems.
Remote User Interface
The Remote User Interface (RUI) consists of a small computer with a touch-screen display. The RUI is optional, but can be very convenient for field operations by providing a remote interface into the System Server. Typical uses include enforcement of the two-person rule during a scheduled add or remove, remote event log viewing and remote monitoring of the system status.
