Continuous Automated Vault Inventory System (CAVIS™) for Accountability for Special Nuclear Materials

Overview

The Continuous Automated Vault Inventory System (CAVIS™) is a system designed to continually monitor the status of stored nuclear materials from remote locations. The system includes an integrated set of low-cost sensors that are capable of monitoring specific item radiation, weight, and temperature attributes. It is also capable of handling information from other remote sensing devices or systems (e.g., SmartShelf™ and ReflectoActive™ Seals).

Features

  • Nuclear material inventories can be conducted without accessing material
  • Inventories can be completed without any radiation exposure to personnel
  • All significant attribute changes can be immediately reported and acknowledged
  • Multiple attribute monitoring can be accomplished for each item
  • The system is adaptable to pre-existing nuclear material storage configurations
  • The system is designed with multiple layers of security
  • The system provides data authentication for independent auditing
  • The system can also be adapted for monitoring a variety of other hazardous materials (e.g., mixed waste)

System Operation

CAVIS™ continually verifies specific item attributes weight, radiation, and temperature) from stored nuclear materials. It monitors these attributes for "change-in-state" by continually polling a network of devices called "sensor concentrators." Each sensor concentrator monitors the sensor package associated with each container of nuclear material and reports status to a central computer. The concentrators can be monitored by a desktop personal computer running either a National Instruments LabView® (Windows® 95) application or the GraFIC™ software package on a Windows® NT system. In this way thousands of items may be monitored from a single central site or by a distributed computing network operating in a client/server environment.

Hardware and Software Requirements

  • ORSENS™ Sensor Concentrator
  • RADSiP™, RADTELL™, or other ORSENS™ radiation sensors
  • ORSENS™ weight sensors
  • Windows® 95 with CAVIS™ LabView® software or
    Windows® NT with CAVIS™ GraFIC™ software package
  • An Intel Pentium 133 MHz based computer (or higher)
